CIA Director talks about ‘ungoverned spaces and of the digital revolution’

Director Brennan, CIA.

Terrorism and instability rock the nations of our 21st century world, and as people watch demented, fanatical men and women with black flags trying to establish their very own “global Islamic caliphate” and killing every person they don’t like in the meanwhile, it may comfort some to understand that there are people who think about fighting these terrorists and look forward to thwarting them and killing them, too in defense of Western civilization.

The challenges of “ungoverned spaces and of the digital revolution,” according to the current Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director John O. Brennan, are “two defining features of global instability that keep us quite busy at Langley.”

Speaking recently before a crowd at the Brookings Institution in Washington D.C. recently, (see CIA website speech text here), Brennan also believes that technology has transformed human interaction.

The ‘unstable world’

“Beyond the challenge of ungoverned spaces, the digital revolution is perhaps the defining feature of our unstable world, in both the most positive and negative ways,” Brennan said. “The cyber realm and information technology have fundamentally transformed the most prevalent means of human interaction. These technologies have given rise to new information-based industries that have displaced older ones, sometimes deepening gaps within societies and between the developed and underdeveloped worlds. They enable social interaction that can be swift and destabilizing, as we saw with the so-called Arab Spring. And they invest individuals with unprecedented influence and even power—for better or worse.”

Enemies can now utilize new tools of technology without ever needing to travel to this country, Brennan tells the crowd. “Cyber makes it possible for our adversaries to sabotage vital infrastructure without ever landing an agent on our shores. And we have seen how our own citizens can be indoctrinated by terrorist groups online to commit terrible acts of violence here at home.”

Directorate of Digital Innovation

In addressing the issues confronting the nation’s security, Brennan announces a new CIA Agency directorate called the “Directorate of Digital Innovation.” It is the first new addition in over a half-century, he said, and it is created in an “effort to hasten the adoption of digital solutions into every aspect of our work. It is accelerating the integration of our digital and cyber capabilities across all our mission areas—espionage, all-source analysis, open-source intelligence, liaison engagement and covert action.”

During his remarks , Director Brennan also mentioned the turmoil people are seeing in 2016. (The headlines this Friday are about a possible coup in Turkey from theGuardian, and another horrific terror attack in France reported over at wbtv.)

2016 ‘instability’ costs

“Clearly, the world in 2016 is witnessing a significant amount of instability,” stated Brennan, “and has been for some time. Instability is a vague and antiseptic term, but we all know that it carries some very real costs—especially in terms of humanitarian suffering, rising extremist violence, and diminishing freedom throughout the community of nations.”

Reports come in about the decline of freedom, he said. “For instance, Freedom House this year reported an acceleration in a decade-long slide in democracy around the world. The number of countries showing a decline in freedom for the year—72—was the largest since the downward trend began.”

Furthermore, Brennan said, “[t]he challenges we face today are unprecedented in both their variety and complexity. They are highly fluid, constantly shifting and taking on new dimensions. And they are increasingly interconnected, testing our ability to anticipate how developments in one realm will shape events in another. When CIA analysts consider the trends that are shaping the coming decade, they look at dynamics such as rapid population growth and urbanization in the developing world. They look at technological advances that vastly outpace the ability of governments to manage them, as well as at low economic growth globally.”

‘daunting array of 21st century challenges’

The nations of the world are experiencing greater and greater stress, Brennan observes. “If these trends hold, we could see greater volatility and increased demands on nation-states, which are already under the greatest stress we have seen in many years, perhaps going back to the period after the First World War. Governments worldwide have found that handling the daunting array of 21st century challenges on their own—those related to economics, security, technology, demographics, climate change, and so on—is increasingly difficult, if not impossible.”

Director Brennan mentions the practical side of his work, in thwarting groups and individuals intent upon doing evil. “… it means that our operations officers must be able to maintain their cover in a dynamic digital environment and collect in it as well. It means that our analysts must be able to quickly process and analyze enormous volumes of data. And it means that our IT experts must be able to harden our networks against intrusion and better protect our sources and methods.”

He calls for national discourse on the issues. “Some 85 percent of the internet is owned and operated by the private sector, which is why we need to have an honest, vigorous dialogue between public and private sector stakeholders about government’s proper role in the cyber domain. In that vein, we need to have a more robust and comprehensive national discourse about how the government and the private sector must work together to safeguard the security, reliability, resilience, and prosperity of the digital domain.”

Sanders yields; Clinton ‘has won the Democratic nominating process’

Bernie Sanders is endorsing Hillary Clinton as the Democratic Presidential nominee for 2016, according to multiple media outlets, in a joint rally in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, bringing a strong reaction from another Presidential presumptive nominee Jill Stein of the Green Party.

Perhaps another nightmare scenario ends today for Clinton then, having just recently escaped being legally held as responsible as others have been by both the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Department of Justice/Attorney General of the United States. Director James Comey and Loretta Lynch both opted to not hold the former First Lady, Secretary of State and ex-New York Senator as accountable as other Federal government employees for setting up a private server and sending classified, government emails on the same private system, gaining the anger of many voters. Sanders thus lays concerns to rest that many feared he just might “… sit on his hands in the general election — or worse, run as a third-party candidate on the left,” as proposed by a post over at myfox8.

“Together, we have begun a political revolution to transform America and that revolution continues,” Senator Sanders stated in a transcript from politico-transcript online.

He also conceded he did not have enough delegates won. “Secretary Clinton has won the Democratic nominating process, and I congratulate her for that. She will be the Democratic nominee for president and I intend to do everything I can to make certain she will be the next president of the United States.”

However, the presumptive Green Party nominee, Jill Stein, had strong words about this, according to Nick Gass, in another Politico report.

“If you don’t want to vote for a war monger or racist billionaire, there are more options. The political revolution will keep going,” Gass quoted Stein’s tweet just before Sanders’ announcement.

Airman Spencer Stone stabbed in Sacramento

Airman 1st Class Spencer Stone, one of three friends traveling on a Thalys train to Paris this summer who helped take down an attacker, was stabbed after an argument reported shortly after midnight in Sacramento.

An Air Force spokesman, Lt. Col. Christopher Karns, states that Stone is in stable condition however, per CBSnews. Lt. Col. Karns said although details are sketchy, Stone is being treated in a hospital in the Sacramento area.

The stabbing is being handled by local law enforcement officials, but in the story from Yahoonews local Sacramento Officer Traci Trapani, described as a spokeswoman for the police department, is quoted as revealing that “… police received a call at 12:46 am about a person who had been stabbed outside a bar in the city’s downtown area.”

Furthermore, Officer Trapani said this: “The victim had sustained multiple stab wounds in his upper torso or upper body but he is in stable condition and is expected to survive.”

The suspect apparently fled the scene, per Officer Trapani, and it is “unclear” what prompted the fight. Airman Stone was the only victim according to various media.

Planned Parenthood vs. US House Oversight Committee:

Cecile Richards, President of the federally funded organization Planned Parenthood, came to testify before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform yesterday in defense of the organization and in light of a series of extremely disturbing videos from the Center for Medical Progress.

From her own testimony to the Oversight committee, Richards stated that  Planned Parenthood, with a “99- year history,” is “a leading provider of high-quality reproductive health care in the United States” with “more than 10,000 people who work at Planned Parenthood’s national office and 59 affiliates” providing “high-quality health care and information with compassion and a deep commitment to women’s health, well-being, and dignity.”

Federal funding for ‘lucrative’ salary

But Rep. Jason Chaffetz, the chairman of the House Oversight committee, was not persuaded by her words, according to various reports on the matter. FoxNews is highlighting points Chaffetz is making. One point being that “Obamacare makes federal funding for Planned Parenthood duplicative,” due to the facts that “HHS identifies Title X as a service for ‘low-income or uninsured individuals” and “[u]nder Obamacare, individuals should be getting their health care via Medicaid or a Qualified Health Plan.”

What might also be a problem for some, is the big salary being paid to President Richards and other top tier Planned Parenthood executives, which is described as “lucrative” in the Fox story, and many Americans might agree if they knew that right after the U.S. financial crisis of 2008, President Richards was doing well. In fact, it seems “[f]rom 2009 to 2013, Planned Parenthood and its related organizations paid President Cecile Richards more than $2.47 million,… which includes $590,928 for 2013.”

Other media raised objections to Richards and Planned Parenthood as well. Pro-life website CharismaNews in fact, raised an important point from Richards’ testimony. “… Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards confirms that some Planned Parenthood affiliates sell the body parts of aborted babies. In her testimony, Ms. Richards states, ‘Planned Parenthood is proud of its limited role in supporting fetal tissue research.'”

Richards has never refuted the video footage from the Center for Medical Progress it seems. The piece in Charisma News points that out, and there is a post at theAmericanSpectator reflecting on “…a 1926 speech to the KKK by one of their most revered ideological darlings, Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger.”

Huh?

The information on Sanger’s connection with the KKK, written by , states that Sanger openly wrote about this “… in her 1938 autobiography published by W.W. Norton, one of the leading New York publishing houses.”

“One might ask,” Kengor writes, “why would the KKK be so interested in Ms. Sanger? The reasons are obvious, a natural fit.”

In considering the time period of Sanger and of her contemporaries who wanted to make “racial improvement,” we need only recall Adolf Hitler’s genocidal activities during World War II and “…the U.S. Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, who declared that ‘[t]hree generations of imbeciles are enough,'” according to Kengor.

Sanger, the Planned Parenthood founder, “… lamented America’s ‘race of degenerates'” Kengor states. She felt a need to purge the national landscape of its “human weeds” and “the dead weight of human waste.” Sanger believed these people included the “feeble-minded,” the “insane,” and the just plain “idiots.” Apparently, they felt the need to refine the human “gene-pool,” according to Kengor.

Sanger wanted to “Create a Race of Thoroughbreds,” and, as she wrote to Dr. Clarence Gamble, one of her “Negro Project collaborators, on December 10, 1939: “We do not want word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population,” Kengor quotes in his article.

By the way, there is also 13 minute long video from the Center for Bioethical Reform which “… shows the birth of what CBR describes as a ’17 1/2 week fetus,’ according to a report by John Sexton over at Breitbart. “The Center for Bioethical Reform, in partnership with the Grantham collection, has released the full version of a video which became a source of political controversy after the 2nd Republican debate.”

Underneath a “graphic content” warning, comes the description that a fetus “… is placed in a metal pan with a clamp attached to its umbilical cord.” Sexton writes that the source video (available with a warning over at  You Tube. You can get the link at the above Breitbart reference.)

Secton also states that “… a comparison demonstrates the new video is the source of the brief segment that appeared in a video produced by the Center for Medical Progress (CMP), a pro-life investigatory group which has produced undercover videos critical of Planned Parenthood.”

So, the ongoing fury in the nation just seems a perfect opportunity for those “teachable moments”  all of us human beings might stop to ponder. Does the video seem to buttress the sentiments of one 2016 Presidential candidate Carly Fiorina? She has taken such grief for her last debate remarks on the matter of the videos and Planned Parenthood, including an assault during a speech by some Planned Parenthood supporters in Iowa, per theHill. Per the story by Jonathan Easley, Fiorina is supporting the notion of defunding Planned Parenthood, “… and has said congressional Republicans should take the fight to the White House, even if it results in a government shutdown.”

“I believe this is something we must stand up and fight for,” Easley quotes Fiorina, who also said she believes the federal giveaway of taxpayer money is like “a political slush fund” for Planned Parenthood.

Carly Fiorina says Americans are ‘horrified’ and defends her remarks on Planned Parenthood

“This is happening in America today,” Presidential candidate and former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina told Chuck Todd on MeetthePress this morning.

Todd, in introducing the question about “the Planned Parenthood situation,” per the NBC transcript, stated that there was “no tape” of what she referred to in the debate this month. “Are you now willing to concede that you exaggerated that scene?”

Fiorina pushed back. “No, not at all. That scene absolutely does exist. And that voice saying what I said they were saying, ‘We’re going to keep it alive to harvest its brain’ exists as well.”

And further, Fiorina believes the organization is “… trying to distract the American people from the hideous reality that Planned Parenthood is aborting fetuses alive to harvest their brains and other body parts. That is a fact. Planned Parenthood will not and cannot deny this because it is happening. It is happening in this nation. And taxpayers are paying for it. Planned Parenthood desperately wants everyone to think this isn’t going on. Because when Americans realize it is going on, whether they are pro-life or pro-choice, they are horrified. This goes to the character of our nation and it must be stopped.”

Some in the media suggest, such as Casey Quinlan in her piece for ThinkProgress, that Fiorina is perhaps misunderstanding the use of stock images in the re-telling on these investigative videos made by the Center for Medical Progress. A former tissue procurement technician tells of her experience. Todd, in his interview, told Fiorina “[w]ell, the footage you describe at best is a reenactment.”

Regardless of whether or not it was a “reenactment” video, per CNN even some House Democrats are saying that the Planned Parenthood officials who are clearly seen in the videos “… should have been more careful with their language,” and perhaps the casual talk on the subject “… could be misinterpreted.”
